The couple, Sally and Mel Harrison from Darlington, took off to travel the world after saving up and taking early retirement.
They bought their first caravan in 2010. They purchased a 2005 Swift Sundance called Hilda. They claim to have always had the wanderlust bug and took earlier retirement due to hearing of so many people waiting to do things in their later years and becoming ill.
The couple started off by going to the Lake District at the weekends to get a feel for what it would be like. Before long they were venturing across seas to places like France, Spain, Germany, Austria and Luxembourg.
After getting a taste for the travelling lifestyle they were hooked and wanted to make it a full-time thing, so in 2014 they upgraded their motorhome to a four-berth Sun Living Lido called Sonny and planned to travel for a year.
“In December 2016, just after Christmas, the dream came true. We packed all our worldly goods into a 20ft container, rented out our house and off we went, down through England, then off to France, Spain, Portugal, Gibraltar, Morocco, Andorra, Italy, Sicily, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia, Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany and the Netherlands.”
“In year one we drove 12,897 miles (20,635.2 kilometres) at a total cost of 16,717.90 euros (£14,926.70), that’s 50.81 euros (£45.37) a day.”
The pair says it’s been the most amazing adventure and are ready to set off again this year and plan to travel to Scandinavia and beyond.
“Would we do it all again? You bet we would. To anybody who is thinking of doing it, take that gap year and do it sooner, rather than later.”
