The Iconic VW T2 Goes Electric

The new Volkswagen ID Buzz has finally made it into production after being revealed in 1972 as a prototype

The ID Buzz is a creative and innovative vehicle. Its design takes inspiration from the original T2 VW campervan, but it is clearly a VW campervan of the future.

Volkswagen first began developing all-electric drive systems for cars in 1970 (pretty impressive!)  to create a vehicle that was powered entirely by electricity. They displayed a prototype of the T2-based Bulli that was powered by an electric drive system. This impressive electric van is due for this autumn more than fifty years later.

The new ID Buzz has a battery capacity of 77kWh, which is more than three times the capacity of the original T2 prototype. Despite its larger size, the ID Buzz still weighs just 500kg, thanks to advancements in battery technology.

Electric cars are becoming more and more popular, and the Volkswagen ID Buzz is a great example of why. The 1972 electric T2 was based on the platform of the conventional T2, making it difficult to install the battery in the vehicle's underbody. Instead, the battery was mounted on the loading floor where it could be removed if needed.

The Volkswagen T2 electric van had a range of about 50 miles, but the company developed an innovative battery-changing system. Improvements to charging capability mean that battery replacement is no longer necessary.

Back in the 70s, few people could have imagined that one day they would be able to teach their van to park itself or speak to it via voice control. However, that is now a reality thanks to the pioneering work done with the T2 electric van in 1972. Today, we can enjoy all of the benefits of this technology.

When can you expect this dreamy van to come out? The first ones should be released this autumn 2022.

We are looking forward to discovering this van as a camper van and what sort of transformation and van renovation this T2 will go through. In the meantime, make sure to check all the available campervans for sale in the UK and many more.
