Arthur Gardner built his first caravan in 1919 for his honeymoon, he went on the launch the Cheltenham Caravan Company and produced the very successful hand built caravans you see here today. These caravans have a lightwight ash wood frame and chassis originally made from melted down wartime gun carriages. All Cheltenham caravans are named after Deer and include the Fawn, Sable, Springbok, Nyala and Waterbuck. They were purchased by some of the first pioneers of overseas caravan touring, having doors on both sides for easy excess on the European roads. Arthur Gardner also went to the USA where he assisted in the design of the famous Airstream. Close to home he helped a Sherborne company of cabinet makers to produce their own caravans which became the well known Castleton Caravan.
