LUNAR CHATEAU 400
“The Lunar Chateau 400 still remains one of the best value family caravans on the market, especially for the first-time buyer.
The Lunar Chateau 400 comes from the company’s European range and has been adapted for the UK market. It is a four berth model with two double beds that combines modern innovations with plenty of continental style. The dimensions of the Chateau 400 are relatively small for a four-berth, so what you lose on internal dimensions you gain on easy of towing and handling.
In daytime configuration, the Chateau 400 feels rather roomy with two seating areas at the front and rear. This clever layout offers flexible seating and dining options. It is solidly built to a very high standard, which is encouraging considering its size and price.
The compact dimensions and relative lightness of the Lunar Chateau 400 make it very easy to tow even by a medium family-sized car. When pitching up, it can be manoeuvred confidently by hand into the desired position and the utilities can be attached without unnecessary delay. The button-free handbrake on this model is a delight to use, as are the steadies that drop into place very quickly. The large front outside locker houses the gas bottle and water reservoir. These are readily accessible as the makers have thought to equip the upward hinging door with two strong gas-struts that hold it ajar.
The Chateau 400 is cleverly and attractively furnished with new burgundy upholstery. Lunar haven’t tried to re-write the rulebook, instead taking a sensible, practical approach that buyers should like. The fabrics used on the upholstery are of very good quality. The inside of the caravan is quite a pleasant environment to be in, especially when you consider just how much it costs. I don’t think there is a better value proposition currently on the market.
The elegance of the 400’s living accommodation creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The extensive use of wood veneer throughout the interior creates a pleasing ambience that defines this caravan as one with quality and style. The designers have included many useful storage cupboards and the dining table proved very easy to erect and dismantle. Effective down lights are a given these days and the Chateau 400 doesn’t disappoint here either. The very ‘English’ three-window front design of the Chateau 400 allows light to flood the main lounge area creating a light and airy space during the day. All windows are fitted with blinds and fly screens, however, should you feel the need to reduce the light.
Cooking, Sleeping and Washing
The kitchen area is situated in the centre of the caravan and would probably disappoint more experienced caravaners. For newcomers, however, there is plenty to please. The glass covered hob and sink provide an adequate work surface. It has a smart stainless steel hob with three burners, a matching sink and a 70-litre fridge that contains a miniature freezer unit. Unusually for European models, this one has a small Cramer oven with rotisserie and grill, which is fitted neatly under the sink.
For a caravan of this size it is quite amazing that you get two double beds. Although the front lounge bed makes up very easily, the comfort could be improved with better cushioning. Having said that, when you consider what you are paying, this is a very well appointed caravan.
With the dividing screen pulled shut, the rear bed area takes on its own en-suite facilities. You can’t expect much in the way of washroom space in a caravan of this size, but for 2005 they have fitted a new full shower facility, hose and shower curtain. Something the previous generations of Lunar Chateau models desperately needed.
The Lunar Chateau 400 still remains one of the best value family caravans on the market, especially for the first-time buyer.
