Autosleeper Duetto Review
The Autosleeper Duetto Basics
‘THE AUTOSLEEPER DUETTO DESERVES A PLACE AMONG THE FINEST MOTORHOMES IN ITS CLASS.’
The Autosleeper Duetto range is based on Britain’s favourite van, the Ford Transit, and powered in standard form by the 2.4-litre ‘DuraTorq’ TDi turbo-diesel unit which produces an output of 115PS. Ford offer you the option of two more powerful engines, one offering 125PS, the other an impressive 135PS. This later engine in the Autosleeper Duetto is mated to a six-speed transmission while Ford’s excellent ‘ASM Durashift’ automatic transmission can be provided with the 125PS unit.
First Impressions of the Duetto
Autosleeper motorhomes are renowned for the high quality of the fixtures and fittings and the Duetto is no exception to the rule. Overall, the woodwork, including the fitted cabinets, in the Autosleeper Duetto is finished to a high standard and the materials used in soft furnishings are of durable quality. The dark blue and greys used on the interior colour scheme may seem a little dull to some eyes while others, such as me, will find it easy to live with and it’s not too easily marked.
As far as driving the Autosleeper Duetto is concerned, using Ford’s Durashift automatic transmission is an enjoyable affair and once you’re used to using it, you should find the system to be excellent in every respect. It’s really simple to work out how to operate the Autosleeper Duetto and it takes the strain out of driving on long touring trips.
Autosleeper have been generous with the amount of storage space provided on the Autosleeper Duetto. There are ample roof lockers all around the motorhome and there’s easy access to more stowage space underneath the sofa. The Duetto is fitted with rear doors, and the conversion’s main sliding door is placed on the nearside. There’s a pull-out step which makes it easier for the less able bodied to enter the caravan. Open the sliding door in the Autosleeper Duetto and step up into the main-living area and you’ll find the swivelling passenger cab seat immediately to your left, the sofa straight ahead with front facing seat to your right. Turn right in the Duetto and moving past this seat you will find the kitchen over in the offside rear corner with the washroom opposite. The wardrobe is sandwiched between the front facing seat and the washroom.
Living Conditions in the Autosleeper Duetto
The high-top and wide-opening sliding main door help to give the impression that there’s plenty of space inside the Autosleeper Duetto for four people. This is not an illusion. Whereas in many four-berth motorhomes, it can be a little wearing having to squeeze past your fellow travellers especially during a long break. It’s quite possible to dine and relax in style inside the Autosleeper Duetto. The dinette is created by utilising the cab’s swivelling passenger seat, the front facing seat and the sofa. The dining table sits in the middle of the van, surrounded by all three seats, and can be removed and stored in its own dedicated compartment within the wardrobe.
Cooking, Sleeping and Washing
The kitchen in the Autosleeper Duetto, although compact, comes equipped with a cooker unit with three-burner gas hob, grill and oven and a drawer for pots and pans underneath. To the right of this is the sink and drainer with 70-litre fridge (with freezer compartment) underneath. Sandwiched between the fridge and cooker is a cutlery draw and cupboard. Although there’s not much worktop space in the Autosleeper Duetto motorhome, a hinged flap folds down on top of the sink and the gas hob has a glass cover which can also be utilised for more food preparation space.
When it comes to the sleeping arrangements, the Autosleeper Duetto is quite adaptable. You have the option of three separate beds or two sizable doubles. The sofa can be converted into a single bed or a double by using the front facing seat. It simply slides out, and by folding the front facing seat down, the two seats meet each other. By filling in with the cushions, you’ll have a spacious double. There is another roomy double bed in the Autocruise Duetto offered above the cab, access to which is via a ladder. This is stored inside the wardrobe when not in use.
Finally, we come to the washroom. This features an electric flush toilet and a drop-down space saving wash basin which incorporates a soap dish, dispenser and toothbrush holder. A roof ventilator allows steam to escape while you’re having your shower. Although not the largest washroom available, it’s well made and pleasurable to use.
With prices starting at £33,400 the Auto-Sleepers Duetto deserves a place among the finest motorhomes in its class.
