CHAUSSON ALLEGRO 67
‘ITS WASHROOM IS, WITHOUT DOUBT, ONE OF THE BEST AVAILABLE IN THIS CLASS.’
The Basics The French-built Chausson Allegro range consists of three models, the 67, 82 and 83. All are low profile motorhomes that sleep four, the Allegro 67 having a fixed rear double bed. The Allegro 67 is based on Fiat’s well-liked Ducato van and features an AL-KO chassis.
This model features the 127bhp, 2.8-litre JTD diesel-turbo engine so you’ll have no problems keeping up with the traffic. It has plenty of power and lots of useful torque. In addition, it’s one of the most refined diesel engines out there. As for this motorhome’s road manners, although the Ducato base vehicle has been around for some considerable time, it’s still one of the leaders in terms of handling prowess. With the Allegro being relatively low to the ground, body roll is not as pronounced as on some models due to its low centre of gravity and AL-KO chassis.
First Impressions Chausson has a reputation for building quality products and the Allegro 67 is no exception. The finishing and bonding of all the polyester exterior panels is carried out extremely well.
Step through the motorhome’s main offside door and you’ll probably agree that the overall appearance of the interior is tasteful and attractive. There are no fewer than four smart fabric colour schemes to choose from, the Ambiance Formoza, an orangey red combination with a leaf-shape pattern, to my eyes at least, being the most appealing. Which ever colour you choose you should be pleased with the quality of the materials used on soft furnishings. As for the woodwork around the motorhome’s interior, it’s well-made and of high quality.
Practicalities The Allegro 67 is well insulated against the cold. All pipe-work is protected against icing along with the waste water and fresh water tank. All Chausson models are equipped with exterior lighting while interior night time lighting is provided by strip lights, with more illumination supplied by directional halogen downlighters. For additional daylight and fresh air, the Allegro 67 comes with a Heki 3 Panoramic skylight located directly over the living area.
As is customary with motorhomes, the Allegro 67 comes with roof lockers, some of these contain adjustable shelving. There’s additional stowage space located underneath the rear fixed double bed.
Living Conditions On board the Allegro 67, there appears to be plenty of space for four people to share. The layout’s logical design helps in this respect. Step up through the door into the living area and you will find the fixed rear bed to your left. On your right is a sofa that fills the space from the door to the cab while opposite the door there’s the kitchen. The washroom is located over in the nearside rear corner and a wardrobe sandwiched between the kitchen and the washroom.
The dining and lounge seating is provided by forward-facing seats and the offside sofa. In addition, the cab is fitted with swivelling Captain’s chairs which provide more seating when dining. All prove to be comfortable and the table can be removed and stored away when not required, as is common practice. There’s a television shelf above the forward-facing seats which is ideal for those occupying the sofa and captain’s chairs, but a bit uncomfortable on the neck for those sitting in the seats below.
Cooking, Sleeping and Washing The kitchen is practical to use and comes equipped with a three-burner gas hob, stainless steel sink, useful sliding storage baskets and a drying rack. A sizable three-way powered AES fridge-freezer is supplied but unfortunately there’s no oven or grill. In mitigation, there is space for a microwave cooker.
The fixed rear double bed measures 1.24 x 2.12m and it’s perfectly comfortable. This bed can be lifted to reveal a capacious storage locker. You can also gain access to this via an external nearside hatch. More bedding comes courtesy of the forward-facing seats and the sofa. Simply remove the table and with a little gentle persuasion they manoeuvre into place to form a double bed.
The Allegro 67 features one of the better designed motorhome washrooms out there. There are more storage facilities than you would normally find, with big cupboards above the frosted opening window and plenty of cupboard space below the basin. Additional stowage for toilet rolls etc is available in a large pocket behind the Thetford toilet. There’s a separate shower unit with a roof-hatch and proper sliding door. All in all, this facility is a pleasure to use.
There are few areas to grumble about with the Chausson Allegro 67. OK, the main door is situated on the wrong side for the UK, like in the vast majority of continental-built models, but it’s only a matter of being careful when exiting. The Allegro 67 is an extremely competitive model that’s well-priced at £41,10
